On Wednesday, February 20th, we’re going to back to court to support Thedford Garber Law in their lawsuit against Sheriff Tom Dart’s inexcusable behavior in refusing to release people from jail that judges had ordered released while awaiting trial. Join us in supporting this class action lawsuit and defending bail reform from Sheriff Dart’s attacks! Please arrive before 8:30am to ensure you have passed through security and are seated in court before proceedings begin.
Last year, CCBF worked with Thedford Garber law to support Taphia Williams. After we paid Ms. Williams’ $5,000 bond, Sheriff Tom Dart refused to release her into electronic monitoring for more than three days, citing his disagreement with the judge’s decision. In February 2018, Dart announced the implementation of unilateral reviews by his office for people whose bond conditions he found unsatisfactory in interviews with the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune. Under that practice, Sheriff’s Office employees detained individuals even after their bonds had been paid or they are otherwise eligible for release in order to conduct additional discretionary reviews of their current charges and background.

Rally and March to Trump Tower
Tuesday, February 5
4:30 pm - Meet at State and Jackson in the South Loop
5:30 pm - March to Trump Tower
On February 5, Trump will deliver the 2019 State of the Union address amid his threats to declare a national emergency or start a new government shutdown. State of the Union?! How about the state of HUMANITY?
ENOUGH of Trump and his fascist regime’s assaults on our lives, here and all over the world. Enough of the Democratic Party’s complicity with family separation and rejecting refugees. Whether Trump’s medieval wall or high tech “border security” with drones and satellites, this is “enhanced” ethnic cleansing.
Join us in the streets with the message:
To the World’s Migrants and All of Humanity,
We REFUSE to Accept a Fascist America!
Tuesday is not the day to just sit home disgusted, scream at your TV, or pretend it’s not even happening while Trump viciously demonizes migrants and promises to further shred of legal norms. Get off your couch and out of your complicity. Bring friends, noise makers, and creative visuals to sound the alarm and wake people up to stand and demand: “IN THE NAME OF HUMANITY, THE TRUMP/PENCE REGIME MUST GO!”

Emergency Action: Say No to the U.S. Orchestrated Right-Wing Coup in Venezuela! Respect Venezuela’s Sovereignty and Democracy! U.S. Out of Latin America!
The Trump administration is actively supporting an attempted right-wing coup against democratically-elected President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela. He declared recognition of an opposition right-wing, Juan Guaidó, the opening shot at “regime change.” This is extremely dangerous and we urge all peace-loving people to come out to protest U.S. coup plots and in defense of President Maduro’s government and Venezuela’s sovereignty.
The right-wing coup plotters inside Venezuela are being directed from the White House, with Pres. Donald Trump, Vice-Pres. Mike Pence, Sec. of State Mike Pompeo, and National Security Adviser John Bolton calling for Maduro’s overthrow. If the U.S. succeeds in its illegal plans, there would be a major destabilization and possible war in the region, with devastating effects for tens of millions of people in Venezuela and Latin America. For years, the U.S. government has imposed crushing economic sanctions on the country, robbing the Venezuelan people of billions in revenues, denying them food, medicine and other needs, and then cynically blaming Venezuela as being solely responsible for its economic crisis.
WHY IS THE U.S. PLOTTING AGAINST PRESIDENT MADURO AND HIS GOVERNMENT?
Ever since President Hugo Chávez took office in 1999, and with Maduro’s succession, the Bolivarian government of Venezuela has worked hard to provide for the people, creating a free healthcare system for the Venezuelan people, has built 2.5 MILLION homes that have benefited 10 million people, and built tens of new universities for free higher education. These benefits are financed by Venezuela’s oil, because the revolutionary government has guaranteed that the oil resources belong to the people, not to U.S. oil companies. Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world. The U.S. machinations are part of a larger regional counterrevolutionary attempt, against Nicaragua, against Cuba and all of Latin America.
THE DANGER OF A COUP IS REAL —
IT IS TIME TO SAY NO TO U.S. INTERVENTION IN VENEZUELA AND ALL LATIN AMERICA!
JOIN US IN THE ACTION TO SAY: STOP THE U.S. COUP PLOTS AGAINST PRESIDENT MADURO AND THE VENEZUELAN PEOPLE, LIFT THE ECONOMIC SANCTIONS, RESPECT VENEZUELA’S SOVEREIGNTY!

The wasteful and shameful government shutdown is now in its FOURTH miserable week. The shutdown is causing needless suffering for federal employees and their families, many of whom live paycheck-to-paycheck and have already fallen behind on their rent, mortgage payments, or bills. As the shutdown continues, vital public services will come to a halt, creating an exponential increase in the cruel effects of the shutdown.
THIS NEEDS TO END. Please come and show your support for these employees and to call for an immediate end to the government shutdown!

Today, Judge Stephenson ruled that all three cops involved in the cover up of the murder of Laquan McDonald were not guilty. She claims that there was no evidence of a cover up in their reports or statements. With tomorrow being the verdict of Van Dyke, things are looking grim.
This is a call to action: Tomorrow, 1/18/2019, in room 500 at 9 AM, show up to stand in solidarity with organizers and the family of Laquan McDonald as we demand, again, #Justice4Laquan

There is a long history, dating back to slavery of our Black women and girls being hypersexualized, silenced, and targeted by sexual violence, as well as abuse. The stories of Black women and girls are often never heard and when they are, victim blaming and shaming occur.
The plight of our Black women and girls is currently on full display as the #MuteRKelly movement has led to a spike in the artist’s music sales. Apologists and supporters of Robert Kelly are complicit in his attacks and sexual abuse of underage Black girls and women.
As a Black man, I believe it is of the upmost importance that other Black men and all allies of Black women and girls take a stand and put an end to R. Kelly’s reign. We can no longer accept and ignore the plight that many of our women face at the hands of powerful men with influence.
We must continue to apply pressure as the organizers of the #MuteRKelly campaign has in ending R. Kelly’s ability to generate cash and hold property that allow him to carry out and cover up his crimes.
We are asking all who stand against R. Kelly and stand against sexual assault, rape, abuse, pedophilia, & the overall toxic masculinity that promotes such cultures to join us this Saturday @ 10 am in front of R. Kelly’s Chicago studio to send clear messages that he does not represent Chicago and he will no longer be protected in Chicago or anywhere. We also want to demand that the building’s owner (Midwest Commercial Funding) immediately engage in further efforts to break whatever contract is held with R. Kelly as this building has been identified as a location of abuse. Any artist, concert promoter, DJ, influencer etc. also know, that the #MuteRKelly movement will continue and you will be called out for any complicity in his actions!
R. Kelly must be held accountable and needs professional help. But, more importantly the Black women and girls who are victims and survivors of his reign of terror must be believed, supported, and know that we as a commUNITY stand with them in calling for justice!
Let this action be part of greater actions in empowering not only our commUNITY, not only Black women and girls, but all commUNITYs and all women and girls in knowing they are not along and this will not be accepted. We must be purposeful in what we are teaching are next generations that the lives of women, particularly Black women must be valued over talent and money!
