The Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression calls upon all its allies, friends and all the various strands of the peoples’ movements to stand up to demand justice for Laquan McDonald, who was brutally shot 16 times execution style by Chicago Police Department officer Jason Van Dyke on the night of October 20, 2014.

The eyes of people around the country are on Chicago. This is the first time in the city’s history that a white police officer has been indicted for first degree murder for killing an unarmed Black person. But from the beginning, starting with the cover-up of the video recording of the murder by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the entire system seems determined to not allow justice to prevail in this case. Without a movement, there is no guarantee of justice.

It is up to the people to make this the first time a white police officer has been indicted, tried and convicted of murdering a Black person. We must do this to end the cowardly, racist past practices where the police murder and brutalize us with impunity and bring about a new day of justice where police are held accountable for the crimes they commit against the people.

On September 5th, the Chicago Alliance calls for a mass protest outside the courthouse at 26th Street and California Avenue to begin at 8:00 a.m. We urge all organizations that want Justice for Laquan to endorse the call, and to join us.

Board Buses to Elwood, IL for Chicagoland Rally

We’re encouraging Chicago area residents to rally and march in Elwood, IL where residents are fighting diesel pollution, and workers are challenging inhumane working conditions in the warehouses.

Join us for a press conference at 9:30 am, and then board buses or hop on the train to travel to Elwood, IL to rally + march.

RSVP and we’ll send you info on how to reserve a bus seat, as well as information about how to travel there by train (we’ll then have shuttles from the train station to the site of the rally).

More info on Elwood:

Chicagoland has half a billion square feet of warehouse space and 150,000 warehouse workers, making it one of the largest concentrations of warehouses on the planet. Many of these warehouses are concentrated in Will County, IL. These warehouses serve as distribution for large corporations like Amazon, Walmart, and Home Depot. Working conditions in the warehouses are notoriously bad: with poverty level wages, temp positions designed to prevent union organizing, wage theft, lack of basic benefits, unsafe working conditions, and discrimination and abuse. Workers have been organizing for years to demand the rights and respect they deserve. Meanwhile, truck and train traffic have increased air pollution in the region, and residents have been organizing to demand an end to warehouse expansion and cleaner air.

Workers and residents are coming together to demand workers’ rights and a clean environment from the corporations that are benefiting off of these warehouses.

They’re asking Chicagoland to come join them to show solidarity on Sept. 8.

On September 18, 2017, General Order 18.8A went into effect in Cook County. The order states that no person is to be locked up in Cook County Jail simply because they can’t afford to pay a money bond. Join the Coalition to End Money Bond, allies from across Cook County, and bail funds from around the country in downtown Chicago on September 18, 2018 as we demand full implementation of the order and an end to pretrial incarceration due to poverty.

In the first three months of the order’s implementation, the number of people incarcerated pretrial in Cook County Jail dropped by 1,400 people, but that decline quickly came to a halt. Now, almost one year after the order took effect, around 2,500 people are still incarcerated in Cook County Jail simply because they can’t afford to pay a money bond. This is in direct contradiction to General Order 18.8A’s directive.

Join us in holding this system accountable and bringing our people home!
