On November 11th 2018, Jemel Roberson, a 26 year old black man, was killed by police while working as a security guard in a nightclub in Robbins, IL. That night while working his shift, an active shooter entered the club. Jemel risked his life to stop the gunman and was killed by Midlothian police when they arrived on the scene.

Jemel was a devoted father, a talented musician and was cherished by his community. Jemel died a hero and he and his family deserve justice.

Police across our nation are targeting innocent black and brown people and must be held accountable for their actions.

On November 11th at 12 noon, to honor his heroic deed, we are peacefully marching from 201 E Randolph St, Chicago, IL 60602 (‘The Bean’) to State Attorney, Kim Foxx’s Office to demand Officer Ian Covey be indicted.

Unite with us on the anniversary of his untimely death as we demand #JusticeforJemel

Join the Rogers Park and Little Village Solidarity Networks and allies Saturday, October 12th, 3:30 pm at Touhy Park in Rogers Park as we march to demand the closure of Heartland Alliance’s child detention centers and the immediate release of the children!

This Indigenous People’s Day weekend, we say “No Stolen Kids, No Stolen Land!” Just as the American Indian boarding schools once did, Heartland’s facilities are used to support a genocidal system, tear apart families, assimilate cultures, and strengthen illegitimate borders drawn across indigenous lands by colonialist states.

Facilities where migrant children are detained and dehumanized to further an accelerating program of white supremacist genocide must be named as what they are: concentration camps. Even those hidden in plain sight, like Heartland’s two facilities in Rogers Park.

Child detention is an instrument of state terror, and it is also big business. Thousands of children are trapped in the immigration industrial complex, where they are abused, neglected, and dehumanized for profit. For the vast majority of kids in their custody, Heartland has the power to reunite them with their families now, but instead they drag their feet, collecting revenue for each day each child is held in detention. Often, children are held until their 18th birthday, when—at the stroke of midnight—Heartland hands them over to ICE agents without warning. Heartland cooperates with ICE in other ways as well, conducting interrogations and collecting biometric data.

(

When we fight back we win. After Heartland’s detention centers came under public scrutiny over allegations of abuse and lax supervision, people got organized and Heartland closed four of its centers in suburban Chicago. Mobilizing our communities into robust solidarity networks, we can build the power necessary to dismantle the underlying systems at the root of these outrages, and work together to create a better world from the bottom up. Join us in the streets to demand:

Meet 3:30 pm at the southeast corner of Touhy Park, near the intersection of Paulina and Sherwin, to kick off the march around 4. Please bring water and wear comfortable clothing and shoes. There will be a midway stop-off point where folks can use the bathroom and pick up water and snacks. Public transportation to the event: The closest El stops are Jarvis Red line (not accessible) and Howard Red/Yellow/Purple line (has elevator) or the 22 Clark bus.

Candlelight Vigil to Reinstate the Voting Rights Act

WE ARE IN THE FIGHT OF OUR LIVES TO TAKE BACK AND PROTECT OUR DEMOCRACY. Our Constitution and democratic laws are at stake as Trump packs the courts with right-wing extremists. They will do anything to keep us from voting or having our votes counted.

On TUESDAY, AUGUST 6, 2019, Public Citizen, United for Democracy Now, NextGen, Daily Kos, and many other groups will be having a vigil in Chicago and across the country to Shine a Light for Democracy, starting at 6:30 p.m., on Michigan Avenue, in the open area just south of the Tribune Tower, 435 N. Michigan (same place as last year). *

Over the years, the American people have watched as states have passed laws that put up barriers to voting and suppress the voices of our communities.

For decades, our right to vote was protected under the Voting Rights Act, but in 2013 the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in Shelby v. Holder decision, and unleashed a new wave of voter suppression.

On the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, leaders across the country are hosting candlelight vigils to call on Congress to restore the protections in the Voting Rights Act.

Since the Shelby decision, 20 states have imposed restrictive voting laws including voter-id laws, voter purges and gerrymandering — all which disproportionately disenfranchise young people and communities of color.

On Tuesday, August 6th, the America people are fighting back.

Help us restore the Voting Rights Act by joining us on August 6th. If you can’t make ours, have your own local vigils.

Together, we can put a stop to discriminatory voting laws and ensure every person’s voice and vote is protected.

*If you want to add your group as a co-sponsor, or if you want to have your voice heard, just let me know.

Individual lights will be for sale for $1.00 or you can use your phone flashlight. We need to light up the sky for the VOTING RIGHTS ACT. Bring your signs or use ours. We will have poster board and markers

Todd Ricketts, co-owner of the Cubs, and his cousin Pete, governor of Nebraska, are hosting a “retreat” in Chicago for top GOP money men, including “guest speakers” like Mick Mulvaney. These are the people who put Trump & Pence in the WH and they are determined to keep him there.

This is a luxury skybox mutation of Trump’s fascist rallies, throwing big money and political connections instead of punches and chants of “shoot them (refugees at the border) down” and “lock her up.”

Don’t pretend this is just normal electioneering when Trump is ripping apart the political process so blatantly that even Nancy Pelosi admits Trump/Pence might not leave if they lose in 2020.
The regime’s consolidating power includes building up forces in “blue cities” which ultimately must be brought to heel in their new fascist social order. A secret weapon of fascism is hidden in plain sight – getting people normalized to the horrors. Migrant children dying at the border over there… women stripped of fundamental rights down there. Devastating wildfires, tornados and hurricanes yonder. Coups and air strikes, white supremacist terror attacks, anywhere but not here. People in blue areas get smaller and more surrounded, giving up ground and losing our soul.

Three years ago at University of IL Chicago thousands shut down an early Trump campaign rally. Now Trump is in power and his moneyed thugs are mobilized to go to venerable Wrigley Field, in the heart of one of the country’s well-known LGBTQ communities, during Pride Month. Really?

If you are any less outraged today then you were 2½ years ago, you are learning to make peace with fascism. This is not about “keep Chicago blue.” It’s about standing up for humanity and saying We Refuse to Accept a Fascist America.

Come out to Wrigley Field at 5pm Saturday afternoon to protest this reception for Trump bag men and political operatives and the owners of the Chicago Cubs who are trying to turn baseball fans into passive spectators – or worse – to Trump’s power grab and juggernaut of atrocities. We call all on Handmaids, marching bands, climate warriors, etc. to join us:
Victory Trump? Hell No! Trump Pence Regime Must GO!
