It’s going down. Renters from across Hyde Park have organized a town hall for all Hyde Park tenants on the day that the Illinois eviction moratorium is set to expire. We’ll be learning about our legal rights as tenants and speaking out publicly about our struggles against our landlords. Elected officials (and maybe even some landlord reps?) will participate in a moderated panel discussion, giving us renters a chance to ask questions about their policy plans and confront them with our demands. You won’t want to miss this.
Residents of any property manager or landlord are encouraged to come and join, including our neighbors in units controlled by Mac Properties, Hyde Park Properties, and TLC. Just bring your masks, observe social distancing guidelines, and come ready to make your voice heard.
After months of landlord neglect throughout the pandemic, and after years of absurd annual rent increases and gentrification, we are fed up and angry as hell. Here’s what we’re going to do about it:
Step 1–Learn about your rights as well as your legal tools for fighting back against indifferent or menacing landlords.
Step 2–Share your story with your neighbors and build a stronger community of trust across the neighborhood.
Step 3–Demand more from decision-makers—elected officials and landlords. Specifically, #CancelRent, #StopEvictions, stop annual rent increases, and stop gentrification. Let us stay in our homes.
The whole event will take place in Nichols Park, which is accessible via paved walking paths.
