Chicago Torture Justice Center’s Survivor and Family Advisory Council, RISE community, and Justice for Families ask all our friends, allies, and supporters to join us for a call to defund not only police, but the entirety of the carceral system that works to control, harm, and destroy Black and brown lives throughout Chicago and the entire country.
As survivors of police torture (pre-, during, and post-Jon Burge) and family members whose loved ones have been brutally killed by police, we know firsthand the violence and trauma we experienced at the hands of police, and in courts, jails, and prisons. In partnership with Black Lives Matter Chicago, we’ll gather this Saturday beginning at 3:00 PM for a rally, march, and car caravan outside of Cook County Jail as we commit to holding these systems accountable.
It is critical to defund police, who collectively are one link in a long chain that attempts to destroy and devastate our communities.
We are calling to #DefundTheCarceralSystem and for the billions of dollars that gets spent to control and disappear Black and brown bodies to be directed to communities most impacted by decades (and centuries) of racialized policing and mass incarceration. We lift up our demands in the names of all who are oppressed by systemic brutality and racialized violence: undocumented people, women, nonbinary, and LGBTQ people, and survivors of police torture who are still incarcerated.
