Demonstration to Shut Down the Heartland Alliance Child Migrant Prisons – and all migrant detention centers!
June 22nd marks one year since the the monstrous practice of family separation against Central American migrants was supposed to end. As we know, the forced separation of families has long been an act of state terror to destroy the migrant spirit and cause irreparable trauma to those seeking a better life.
Since June 22nd 2018, the separation of migrant children from their parents has not been halted, and as of March 2019, a government report shows that over 245 children have been removed from their families since June 2018, in some cases without clear documentation undertaken to track them in order to reunite them with their parents.
Hundreds of kids separated last year before trump’s executive order have still not been reunited because their parents were deported or couldn’t find them within the prison system. And abuse and deaths in detention are documented to be on the rise, with 24 people dying in ICE detention during trump’s time in office so far, including the Indigenous children we know of:
Juan de León Gutiérrez
Felipe Alonzo Gómez
Jakelin Ameí Rosmery Caal Maquin
Claudia Patricia Gómez González
And countless more.
Thousands of children remain trapped in the prison industrial complex that profits off of their incarceration, including in child migrant prisons run by Heartland Alliance and many more non-for profits across the country that claim to be helping the children.
Join us on Saturday, June 22nd as we denounce Heartland Alliance and their baby jails located right here in Rogers Park, and as we demand the immediate release and reunification of all migrant families here in Chicago and across the country!
