Despite popular belief that Christopher Columbus discovered America, there is historical proof that there were American Indians (or Indigenous Peoples) living in America long before Columbus and other Europeans arrived. Due to European colonization, American Indians suffered the loss of their land, homes, lives, and culture. Their presence in our American history is largely unknown and their culture has received little appreciation or respect.
For these reasons, we ask for your support in changing the name from Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. This is our effort to raise awareness and appreciation for American Indians and their culture which serve as the roots of our land. We hope to celebrate American Indians! It is time for our schools, our city, and our State to make a change! As students and staff of West Town Academy, are ready to make this change and fight for the acknowledgement of our country’s true history!

Please join us on Monday, October 8th at 11:45am to protest. Location: 1 W Wacker Dr. Chicago, IL.
